Who Is Nomi? The Inspiring Story Behind Nomi Network

November 27, 2024

2024 marks 15 years since Nomi Network began empowering survivors of human trafficking and vulnerable women through life-changing support and economic opportunities. But the heart of our organization lies in the story of one extraordinary girl—Nomi—whose resilience sparked a movement.

Meeting Nomi: The Beginning of a Mission

In 2008, our co-founders traveled to Cambodia to explore ways to fight human trafficking and empower women economically. During their visit, they met Nomi, an eight-year-old girl in a shelter for underage trafficking survivors. Nomi had endured unimaginable abuse, including exploitation by her stepfather.

Her story was heartbreaking but also deeply inspiring. Despite her trauma, Nomi’s resilience and quiet strength moved our co-founders to action. They chose her name to launch the organization that has gone on to serve more than 20,000 women and girls. Nomi’s courage became the foundation of our mission—and her name became ours.

Girls just like Nomi now have the chance to achieve their dreams free from exploitation.

Nomi’s Journey: A Testament to Resilience

Over the years, she has overcome profound challenges. When she turned 16, our co-founder Diana Mao returned to Cambodia to celebrate her birthday. By that time, Nomi was living in a long-term care facility, receiving the support and resources she needed to heal and grow.

Today, Nomi is 26 years old. Nomi was able to transition from long-term care to living with her mother, who we learned was herself a survivor of the Khmer Rouge genocide at the age of five. Despite generational trauma and significant obstacles, Nomi has flourished. She now speaks fluent English, confidently shares her aspirations, and inspires everyone she meets with her warm smile and hopeful spirit.

Why Nomi’s Story Matters

Nomi’s journey embodies the mission of Nomi Network: to create pathways to independence and success for women and girls vulnerable to trafficking. Her story is a powerful reminder that no child should endure the horrors of exploitation simply because their family lacks resources or support.

At Nomi Network, we work to build networks of opportunity and empowerment for survivors, enabling them to heal, grow, and realize their full potential
